Common Check Engine Light Causes
Understanding what your dashboard is trying to tell you.
- Oxygen Sensor (O2) Failure: Reduced fuel economy, rough idle, failed emissions test. Code P0130-P0134 typically indicates this issue.
- Loose or Missing Gas Cap: Surprisingly common. Evaporative system codes (P0455, P0456) often mean the cap isn't sealing properly.
- Catalytic Converter Problems: Poor acceleration, rotten egg smell, failed emissions. Codes P0420/P0430 indicate converter efficiency issues.
- Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF): Stalling, hesitation, poor fuel economy. Code P0100-P0104 series points to MAF issues.
- Spark Plugs & Ignition: Misfires (P0300-P0304), rough running, decreased power. Worn plugs or bad coils are usual culprits.
- EVAP System Leaks: Fuel vapor leaks in the charcoal canister or vent lines. Often causes code P0440 series.
- Throttle Position Sensor: Erratic idle, poor acceleration, stumbling. Code P0120-P0124 series indicates TPS issues.
- EGR System: Rough idle, stalling, pinging. EGR valve stuck open or closed triggers P0400-P0408 codes.
